Arpilleras are handmade quilted tapestries by women in the highlands of Ecuador, Peru and throughout the South American Highlands. It started as a social program to teach the women a skill that would provide them income. They work on them in their spare time using scrap or donated fabrics. The arpilleras tell the stories of their lives: stories of planting and harvesting potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, grapes, corn; stories of sppining and weaving woll; stories of country life, of tending llamas, cows, sheep and goats; stories of weddings and “fiestas”as well as hardships and loss of loved ones. They also made a galapagos´serial designs. Each one is unique and often contains pieces of metal or wood.
A large arpillera can take up to 6 months to complete and can often be the only sourse of income for the woman´s family.
